There is no complete certainty about the conditions in which the coffee arrived in Colombia. Historical evidence indicates that the Jesuits brought grain seeds to New Granada around 1730, but there are different versions of this. Globally, Colombia is the leading coffee producing country9 and the largest producer of mild coffee in the world.10 The main importing countries of Colombian coffee are the United States, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Sweden. During the 20th century, coffee was the main product within Colombian commercial activities, registering exports of up to 2,560 bags. Since the 1920s, Colombia ranked first as a world producer of mild coffee. The main coffee producing departments in Colombia are: Nariño, Norte de Santander, Antioquia, Valle del Cauca, Cundinamarca, Huila, Cauca, Tolima, Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda, the last three known as the Eje Cafetero.
